PLANTS do both scrubing CO2 and making Oxygen. How many plants would it take to do the same job as these alternatives? How about a comparison video? I'm sure many other fans like me would like to know.

Is this... like... "legal?" I mean, isn't showing all this stuff kind of like revealing somewhat sensitive information, possibly harmful in the wrong hands? I mean.. shows where and how all the mechanisms for one of the most vital functions keeping our nation's service people *alive*... seems kind of sensitive,

About 40 years ago when I was a teen I bought an Oxygen Welding device from Sears which used a small version of those candles with a red substance on the tip, you'd light them just like you would a match and they burned at a phenomenal rate of heat.

I could be wrong but I believe NaOH can work for scrubbing CO2. I always thought lithium hydroxide was used because it’s the lightest available hydroxide available. And on a boat or in space I hear weight is a bit of an issue...

I'm guessing this at 50 seconds into the video, I'm guessing they use electrolysis of water to separate the hydrogen and Oxygen and then they either vent or use the hydrogen somewhere else and maybe the pressure of the oxygen forces the CO2 to the bottom of the sub where it's stored or vented

Hazy Skies13 klukkustundum síðan
I came into this video thinking for sure it was electrolysis from the seawater, but you completely blew my mind when I learned chlorine gas would've also been produced from this reaction. Now I'm *very* interested to hear how they do it. Perhaps by somehow removing the carbon from the CO² to produce O²? Guess I'll find out... **Presses play again**
Hazy Skies12 klukkustundum síðan
Oxygen producing candles... ... ... ... Nope, I got nothing. I'm speechless.
Hazy Skies13 klukkustundum síðan
Oh, so it *is* still electrolysis, just after filtration... Well that's a little disappointing, oh well :/

Electrolysis would be my guess. Tons of surrounding water, tons of electricity because you have a reactor, and you're already using some for desalinization.

Destin... Huge fan.. love what you do, but I was concerned that you suggested sprinkling LiOH on the bunks. I'm not sure what form this LiOH is in, but it looks like pure LiOH is pretty toxic (3 out of 4 on the Health Hazard scale) along the lines of NaOH (Lye). Might be interesting to see what we could learn about how this danger is contained. Maybe "the professor" (Martyn Poliakoff) at Periodic Videos might have something to say.
Nic Ferrier23 klukkustundum síðan
I've got a really cool idea for a video. I'll try to make it as short a possible. The idea is basically catching a snowflake turn from solid to liquid then to gas all in one slow motion shot. I believe you could do this by lowering the atmospheric pressure and increasing the heat inside vs outside. I believe I witnessed this and would love to recreate it and see it in detail.

How to deal with the hydrogen when using electrolysis to make oxygen? Unlike CO2, hydrogen is hard to compress and much more dangerous.

Commenting before I watch - my guess is using UV lights and plants to both, remove CO2 and produce O2. I'll see if I was right.
PhibooDegi Síðan síðan
So if they produce Hydrogen as a waste product. why dont they use hydrogen reactors to power the sub so they make even their own fuel and can stay for under water way longer cause they dont need to refuel
ChrisDegi Síðan síðan
During the Automated Electrolytic Oxygen Generating process, how exactly is the hydrogen separated from the oxygen and then disposed?
Terd FergusonDegi Síðan síðan
I figured they are just really good at holding their breath, that's why they're full of hot air.
ImagesByChaos TeeDegi Síðan síðan
nuclear reactors do not create electricity, generators do. Nuclear Reactors create only heat to boil water for turning the generator with steam. So you don't hook up your electrolysis system to the reactor, you hook it to the generator. Just to clarify.

water is made of two hydrogen and one oxygen molecule . submarines are under water . boom source of o2 . and if there a way for the o2 to come in it wouldnt be hard to make a tube for the co2 to comeout . boom done this is a joke btw

Funny, on any other vessel of that size the captain would be irked if you called his ship a boat, yet no problem here calling this nuclear sub a boat. Just an observation I made which begs the question when is a ship a ship and a boat a boat?
