Fernando Alonso vs Lewis Hamilton - "The Battle of The McLaren's" - 2007
F1's new hotshot vs the man who dethroned Schumacher and won the 2005 and 2006 championships. It doesn't take much for their relationship to turn sour as Alonso and Hamilton fight for the 2007 World Drivers Championship.
Watch their championship battle all the way from the opening round in Australia to the finale in Brazil, seeing all the on-track battles and antics between the two drivers as they fight each other so intensely they forget about the possibility of another driver coming in to pick up the scraps.

Easy to see why he dominates now given his performances then. It's not just the car. Mercedes have been dominant in this era, but people forget the details how in most of the seasons since 2014, it has been pretty competitive. As the saying goes though, there are no asterixis', and people seem to forget these details.

You need to cgange tge titke to McLaren vs Alonso as the team were 100% behind Lewis by half way through the season and ji5hing points that out more than Hungry wgere Lewis hepd up Alonso in Qualifying so Alsono paid him back during the pit stops. Dennis went balistic at Alsoni yet Saint Lewis gets away with what he did. Not that either car shoukd have been on tge grid at all after spygate. Dennis made it clear to the world at that race yhat Alonso was never going to get the support he needed to win the championship and that ahe was done as a McLaren driver at the end of yhe year. Tye last laugh is on Dennis though as Lewus imploded at yhe end of the season and Kimi stole the Drvers Title because of the poor mistakes Lewis made. Lewis is still the only driver I have efer seen since 76 to a have more than 1 accident in either Pit In or Pit out, China in 07 and yhen Canada when he ran into Race leader Kimi R at the end of the pit lane when it was closed .

It's such a shame to read all the negative bile about Hamilton in these comments. This is 2007, his first season and he's beating a reining and double-WDC in the same car. Get some perspective, this is extraordinary stuff. Just rewatch the Canada and Japan races from 2007 to get the real perspective on the Hamilton v Alonso debate, the rookie schools the Champion.

Rosberg winning 7 races in a row in 2016 showed that LH is a lucky driver who can only win in a overpowered car.
Lesedi RamahoboDegi Síðan síðan
@M T As I recall, even Kimi beat Alonso in 2007 and nearly in 2005 if it wasn't for an unreliable McLaren. Vettel beat Alonso in 2010 and 2012. Do I even have to say anything about team mate killer Verstappen?
M T2 dögum síðan
@Lesedi Ramahobo Vettel or Veratappen would have beaten Alonso in 2007? Keep dreaming.
M T2 dögum síðan
@Lesedi Ramahobo I haven't ignored anything. You are the one who made a blanket statement about Rosberg winning 7 in a row and you gave absolutely no context whatsoever to your comment. Now, in 2015, yes Rosberg was more unlucky than Hamilton. However, comparing 2015 and 2016 shows a pivotal difference between Hamilton and Rosberg. That is, when Hamilton had bad luck in 2016, he found a way to keep himself in championship contention despite numerous ridiculous setbacks and Rosberg could only beat him by 5 points in the end whereas in 2015 Rosberg was completely incapable of mounting any kind of fight back when the shoe was in the other foot. The fact of the matter is that Hamilton comes out ahead in both 2015 and 2016 when driver misfortune is taken into account. That is, without Rosbergs bad luck in 2015 Hamilton still convincingly beats him whereas without Hamilton's bad luck in 2016 he clearly comes out ahead of Rosberg. For 2014 luck evened itself out in the end. Rosberg needed the double points race in Abu Dhabi to have any real shot at winning the title.

Lesedi Ramahobo2 dögum síðan
@M T Yet you completely ignore Rosberg's bad luck prior which gifted LH alot of points allowing him to cruse to the championship with races to spare. He drives a car that should be able to win every race in the last 8 years with his team mate as the only competition season by season. His debut was in the fastest car on the grid. Vettel or Vesterpen would have won that 2007 season in LH's shoes.

Alonso is so smart that he let rookie Hamilton steal away the career that he was supposed to have as a McLaren world champion and literally cost himself a chance to drive for Mercedes in the hybrid era with his blackmail attempt. He's a real genius this Alonso guy isn't he. He only managed to get 2 more chances to win the title at Ferrari and failed so you can gloat about him beating Kimi all you want but at least Kimi is a Ferrari world champion, which is something that Alonso will never be, just like he'll never be a McLaren world champion either.

Let's be honest. Obv McLaren favoured Ham bc: british team + british GM + n1 british driver Lewis is amazing, faster than Alonso in one lap, but the spanish is very strong in all areas. For sure best two f1 drivers with Shumacher on 21st century (now Verstappen is amazing too tho).
M T3 dögum síðan
Let's be honest. Alonso only has himself to blame for resorting to blackmail and actively being involved in the Spygate Scandal by means of illegally sharing sensitive Ferrari information via email with Mike Coughlan and Pedro De La Rosa, ultimately costing McLaren-Mercedes $100m and DSQ from the constructors championship, which has also cost Alonso a drive with Mercedes in the hybrid era. All because he couldn't handle facing Hamilton without the preferential treatment he expects at every team he drives for. All Alonso had to do was be a more level headed human being, like the non British driver Mika Hakkinen, who also drove for Ron Dennis at McLaren against a British teammate just a few years before Alonso was at the team and won two world championships. Alonso failed where a foreign driver showed what was possible in the exact same situation not long before. As for the whole "fast over 1 lap" vs "complete driver" topic, this is always said about young drivers vs older drivers. People are doing it with Verstappen against Hamilton now. Hamilton is clearly the complete driver today. That's after coming into the sport as showing a talent that had not been seen since the great Ayrton Senna himself. Verstappen is the only driver since Hamilton who has shown that same talent level. That's why this years title fight is going to be epic. Meanwhile Alonso can only get a seat at Renault because he's burnt too many bridges. Non of the top teams want him.

Kimi Räikkönen really earned the title in the 2007 season. Kimi ran 12 podiums in the season, including six GP victories. Hamilton and Alonso also drove 12 podiums, but both "only" four GP wins. Just little detail, it was Kimi Raikkonen winning that year. Thi is really a titlebait, like Kimi got all that points for free and then somehow won the championship. Let me tell you, it was mclaren who got caught with a spygate, so yea, it was a good year for them, when they copied the whole Ferrari F2007. Otherwise they would probably built another unreliable piece of shit like in 2005.

You are Delusional. It was Alonso who had special treatment at McLaren in the early part of the season. He was the proven champion while Hamilton was just a noob rookie. Of course Alonso was favoured. Its not even debatable but this all changed when Hamilton proved how good he was and Dennis started treating them equally from Canada onwards. That's when the problems really started because Alonso couldn't handle how competitive Hamilton was and just expected to be given #1 driver privileges. That's why he resorted to blackmail. Its all Alonso's fault and his fanboys need to deal deal with it. Alonso ruined his relationship with Ron Dennis when he tried to blackmail him. It has also cost Alonso the chance to drive for Mercedes in the hybrid era because his actions cost them a lot of money with the repercussions of the Spygate Scandal.

@MeTheDroidor You see, you lose all credibility when give false information about what actually happened in 2010 and 2012. Alonso fans always do this which makes it very easy to take you to school in a debate. It just shows that you are either deliberately lying about 2010 and 2012 or you didn't even watch those seasons. 1) 2010 was a season where all the title contenders made mistakes but Alonso actually made the most mistakes out of all of them with incident's like squeezing JB too hard at the start of the Australian GP and ending up in a spin, false starting in China, binning his car into the wall in Monaco FP3 and missing qualifying because of it, overtaking Kubica off track at Silverstone and failing to yield before Kubica retired, binning his car into the wall at the Belgium GP that Hamilton won and then, in the title decider in Abu Dhabi, Alonso lined up 3rd in what was clearly the best starting car in the grid by a country mile yet managed to lose a position to JB at the start, which is why he lost time to Hamilton and Vettel up front and ultimately found himself in a position where the piss poor Vitali Petrov took Alonso to school in a one on one battle in the most humiliating way when Alonso had the title on the line. 2) No Alonso wasn't unlucky in 2012. Alonso was actually one of the luckiest drivers in 2012 in a season that Hamilton's luck was absolutely atrocious. In fact, for both 2010 and 2012 Alonso made a net gain in point's both seasons because any bad luck he did have was over weighed by the good fortune he had befitting from other drivers issues. Hamilton and Vettel were the complete opposite. Both of them came out with a net loss in point's both season's because any good luck they had was overweighed by the amount of bad luck they had. This can easily be shown by analysing both 2010 and 2012 for driver misfortune. Vettel deserved to win the title in 2010 and accounting for driver bad luck he should have won it by a bigger margin than he already did with Hamilton 2nd and Alonso down in 5th while in 2012 Hamilton deserved to be champion ahead of Vettel in 2nd and Alonso 3rd. Alonso does not win the title in any projection accounting for driver bad luck from 2010-2013. 3) Alonso absolutely is not more of a genius driver than Hamilton. Hamilton showed that his raw natural ability was already better than Alonso's when he was just a rookie which is why Alonso ran away from being his teammate after only 1 season when he had a 3 year contract. This would not have happened if Alonso is the genius you claim he is. Alonso needed to leave the competitive teammate environment he had at McLaren against Hamilton, rather than stay at the team and prove he's more of a genius than Hamilton for the full length of his 3 year contract, and instead drove for teams that only supported him for most of his career. Alonso is only happy when he is in teams that only support him. Also, Hamilton was constantly compared to Senna in his earlier years. He was labelled the most naturally gifted wheel to wheel racer and overtaker since Senna and its actually Max Verstappen who has had that same kind of impact since he's been in the sport. Alonso has always been more of a robotic kind of driver like Schumacher. Alonso has never had the same kind of finesse and flair as Hamilton, who was a genius level risk taker like Senna and Verstappen when he was younger. Today Hamilton has completely altered his style and drives more like Prost because its the best way to get the most out of the Mercedes in what is a super preservation formula on the ridiculous Pirelli cheese tyres that have turned F1 into a super tyre preservation championship. Also, Hamilton is clearly far superior to Alonso in the wet as well as being faster than him in qualifying. Hamilton's wet weather ability is on another planet and his raw speed was enough to destroy Alonso 6-2 for pole positions when he was just a rookie. SIX-TWO!!!!! 4) This video doesn't show Alonso is better at all. The reality is that Alonso only had more points than rookie Hamilton in races 1 and 2 in Australia and Malaysia. Hamilton led Alonso in the championship for nearly the whole season and Alonso was in complete desperation mode with 2 races to go because he was a gigantic 12 points behind Hamilton back in the days when a win was worth 10 points. Alonso needed a miracle for Hamilton not to win the title. He was getting absolutely slaughtered by Hamilton in the wet Chinese Grand Prix by 20s before McLaren ruined Hamilton's race by leaving him out on track with tyres that were down to the canvas. Hamilton lost his 20s lead over Alonso in 2 laps sliding around in those types before beaching it in the gravel and then in Brazil Alonso needed Hamilton to have a completely bizarre gearbox reboot that dropped him out of title contention and despite Hamilton's issues in those last two races Alonso still couldn't beat Hamilton in the championship standings. Hamilton should have beaten Alonso by 15-20 points to the championship and Alonso is extremely fortunate that this did not happen. Alonso knows how lucky he was. He was praying for miracle and he got it.
MeTheDroidor21 degi síðan síðan
@M T Alonso is a genius and a figure, he has a strong character and that makes him special, too. And it does not matter. Alonso at Ferrari demonstrated why he is the best in history, driving a tractor and losing the 2010 championship due to the team and the 2012 championship due to bad luck. But nobody like him showed those years who is the best driver. Better that than going with your arm in the window in a Mercedes. On the other hand, I just saw this entire video again and I reaffirm that it makes it clear that Alonso is better. Obviously, Hamilton proved to be the best rookie in history.

One of the best seasons in the 2000's. The 2006,2007 and 2008 were my favorite seasons. Hamilton came out of nowhere in 2007 against a 2 x WDC Alonso. People looked at him with skepticism, no one knew who he was. This was to his background and back then people were way racist than they are now. The fact that everybody looked at him different made him quite popular after he showed his talents on the track. One of the most equal fight, 1 on 1 since Senna and Prost!! Great fights through out the entire season though Alonso was not quite fair play(Hungary) and his ego at the end of the year was really bruised beaten by a rookie!! @M T baby...i started watching F1 back in the 80's...the world doesn't need biased people's consent to recognize the spy story..which is official...and McLaren was condemned...hence LH using number 22 the 2008 season...guess why...out of 22 cars...he's been racing with number 22 the next year...but yea you ignore this...keep ignoring baby...leave history to men who respects history the way it was made
M T28 dögum síðan
@Riccardo Incani I understand exactly what I wrote. No Ferrari IP was ever used or found on the 2007 car. You know nothing. Too many new fans who never even watched F1 in 2007 are trying to rewrite history. The punishment for McLaren was complete nonsense. It was basically driven by a Vendetta that Max Mosley had against Ron Dennis.
Riccardo IncaniMánuði síðan
@M T I don't understand if you understand what you write...the data illegally obtained have been used to illegally upgrade a car which otherwise wouldn't...in other words...without cheating the performance of both McLaren would have been worse...translated none of McLaren drivers would have fought for title till the very end and it'd be a comfortable 1-2 Ferrari...it's not so complicated
M TMánuði síðan
They weren't illegal. The reality is that it was only a select few people who acted illegally. Mostly Mike Coughlan of McLaren and Nigel Stepney of Ferrari but Alonso's emails with Pedro De La Rosa discussing Ferrari information that he got from Mike Coughlan gave the FIA enough evidence to justify punishing McLaren as if the team was using Ferrari intellectual property when that clearly wasnt the case at all. The situation was made worse by the fact that Ron Dennis and the FIA president Max Mosley had a long standing beef with each other and Mosley used Spygate in his personal vendetta against him. No Ferrari IP was ever found to be incorporated in the 2007 McLaren and then for 2008 Max Mosley literally ordered McLaren to show their design process every step of the way to ensure that car wasn't illegal as well. As for why the McLaren driver's were allowed to remain in the 2007 championship, Mosley stated that it was decided to allow them to compete for the good of the sport and the fans but some people actually believe that McLaren deliberately threw Hamilton's chances in the last two races as part of an agreement that Ferrari had to win the drivers title because of Spygate. Hamilton had a sizable lead in the championship with 2 races to go but a ridiculous strategy call in China leaving him out on destroyed tyres and a completely random gearbox reboot in Brazil stopped him winning the title.

"McLaren favored Hamilton!" Nobody pays 20 million dollars a season for two years to a champion to then damage him and favor the newcomer. It's an economic suicide, reputation suicide, with sponsor suicide.

There is something wrong between your answer and what MT reported above. He cites the source, but you make a guess. Alonso has always been respected for his abilities, but much less for his self-centeredness which has set him up against too many in every team. Only with Briatore did he get along, because they are two leaders but each did not invade the other's sector. Alonso in McLaren thought he would do as in Renault, but in McLaren (and Ferrari) you work as a team to win as long as possible, not to win only with him. All of this is reported in several sports newspapers and it was clearly stated on the occasion of his retirement in 2018: Alonso was still strong, but he had made a bad name and nobody wanted one who makes people fight in the team.
Ernesto Gasulla29 dögum síðan
@micotz #1 drivers treated as such by the team don't have issues... Alonso soon realized he was not going to be respected.
micotzMánuði síðan
@M T Among other things, already from the tests of January 2007 Alonso began to have friction with the team due to his egotism
M TMánuði síðan
It was a 3 contract Alonso was on meanwhile Hamilton was earning peanuts in comparison on a rookie salary. Alonso literally joined a team where every team member wanted to work on his car for the obvious reason that they all saw him as their best chance to win titles after he'd just became the must important driver in the sport by dethroning Schumacher. Nobody wanted to even work on Hamilton's car at all. They all saw it as being assigned the #2 car and their was even political infighting behind the scenes with some members going against team protocol by asking senior personnel to make sure they got to work with Alonso. It's all in former McLaren mechanic Marc Priestley's book. He states categorically that Alonso was fully supported all year long by a dedicated crew of mechanics and engineers who wanted nothing more that to beat Hamilton's side of the garage, even after Alonso tried to blackmail Ron Dennis.

M TMánuði síðan
@MrZillaman73 That's ridiculous. Hamilton proved Ron Dennis' decision to put him in the car completely correct by nearly winning the championship as a rookie. Hamilton's debut season proving himself in the high pressure scenario of a competitive car fighting for race wins and championships while up against a world champion teammate is 10x more impressive than driving a crap car with zero pressure. Alonso fans are just salty that Hamilton was given this opportunity and beat Alonso in the same car.
MrZillaman73Mánuði síðan
@M T No rookie ever, NO MATTER HOW GOOD YOU ARE SHOULD EVER START IN A TOP CAR......PERIOD. Name me one former champion who has??? You earn more respect from the public working your way up. Life is a struggle!!!!
M TMánuði síðan
Well if you really believe that then it means you believe that Alonso let a crap driver ruin his career. Hamilton, as a complete f1 novice rookie, walked into Alonso's life, beat him in the same car, made him run away from a lucrative 3 year contract at the legendary McLaren team like a coward and then had to suffer the humiliation of Hamilton winning the championship with McLaren instead of him 2008. Hamilton is McLaren's last champion, not Alonso, who never ever managed to win a single title after Hamilton did that to him. No titles since 2006, 15 years ago. Hamilton completely destroyed Alonso's career.

I had been so used to the British press hyping their own that I assumed Hamilton couldn’t be good enough to live up to it. But it was obvious from the first race that the hype was warranted for once. People say now that it’s easy in a Mercedes and maybe it is but Bottas rarely makes it look easy in that car. In 2009 Hamilton won poles and races in a shitty McLaren.
Ernesto Gasulla29 dögum síðan
Didn't Russell's Bakhir race prove it's the damn car, not the driver?

Alonso should have won this year.. I was his own pride and emotions that stopped him.
M TMánuði síðan
Actually Alonso trailed Hamilton in the championship standing's for virtually the whole season and if any McLaren driver should have won the 2007 title it was clearly Hamilton, not Alonso. In fact, Alonso only had more points than Hamilton in races 1 and 2 in Australia and Malaysia. After that they tied in Bahrain(3/17), Hamilton led in Spain(4/17), they tied again in Monaco(5/17) but then from race 6 in Canada Hamilton led the championship standings all the way to Brazil and even had a massive lead over Alonso with 2 races to go before McLaren gave Hamilton the most ludicrous strategy in F1 history in China leaving him out on destroyed tyres and then a nonsense gearbox reboot in Brazil dropped him to the back of the field for 30 odd seconds. Alonso is actually very very lucky that rookie Hamilton didn't beat him to the title. Extremely lucky.
