We all use the internet every day but do we really understand how it works? And do we know what's on the horizon? Snazzy Labs takes an exclusive tour of one of the most beloved internet companies in America, UTOPIA Fiber, a non-profit government-owned fiber network that leases its infrastructure out to ISPs. UTOPIA coverage areas have very inexpensive home and business gigabit internet, 10 gigabit internet, and even 100 gigabit internet thanks to the power of fiber technology. We tour a fiber hut, see a home installation, and take a look at the company's network operations room. Don't miss this unique video.

I've been trying to get them to upgrade to fiber here since 2002 and they won't do anything. My neighborhood would be great for utopias experiments but like my isp no one else will come in here which is ridiculous because we aren't in the middle of nowhere.

I recently moved From Sandy, OR and had Sandynet (fiber to the house, 300/300 $42/month or 1000/1000 $60/month), now have Comcast. Oh how I dislike cable internet. I have no need for 600+ down speeds. 200+ down is more than needed. What I need is 200+ up speed and with cable I'm capped at 18 up. I strongly dislike how cable is high down speeds and low up speeds. I also miss the unfair low ping for gaming

This is exactly what I what I want to see all across the US. I just can't understand why every ISP has to route their own cables to every house. Oh wait, it's because they don't want competition, they want localized monopolies. Sharing common infrastructure wouldn't let them maintain chokeholds over their customers. I really wish the US government would step in on this and make internet infrastructure just that, infrastructure, so we could have more choice in ISPs.

If you think about it, most of the speed demands in recent years have come about because of high quality streaming. Most streaming tops out at around 30 mb/s, therefore many people are still happy with 100mb connections. Now we have gigabit internet, other than downloading games faster there's not that much noticeable difference between 100mb/s and 1gb/s. 10Gbit is a hard sell and in all honesty, I think it will just be something that happens naturally, people are not going to pay any extra to upgrade to it. 1Gb internet will be fast enough for years to come. If my ISP offered me an upgrade from 1Gb to 10Gb for an extra £5 per month, I'd still probably turn it down.

Love this video. But being in the UK, where hardly anywhere has a 1gbps connection and some places are only just getting 100mbps I am very jealous of America. Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) is only just being rolled out in some areas as well. We are currently mainly doing Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) and then Copper from the cabinet to the house. We need an equivalent Utopia to come to the UK to do this.
