I brought Starlink into the Mountains! Peak speeds of 150mbit/s Off Grid!

I brought Starlink into the mountains near my house, I also brought a pFsense router and tested a site-to-site IPSec VPN.
Fraser Valley, BC Canada
Distance from "Service Address":
14.04 Miles
12.29 Km
NAT / Public IP
After further research, it looks like Starlink uses CGNAT on the IPv4 Interface. "Carrier Grade Network Address Translation"
To the best of my knowledge, the network works like this:
Basically meaning there are 2 NAT's at play, but the CGNAT we have no control over. So port forwarding and UPNP do not look possible on IPv4
I did however get a IPv6 IP as well which I beleive is a public IP. So as things shift to IPv6 over the next decade it should become less of an issue.
It appears the device is not geolocked in traditional means. Based on what I could find on Starlinks support, each user is assigned to a satellite. So if you are within range of your assigned satellite, you will get internet. So in theory this could be a fairly large area. I plan to test it further.
"Starlink satellites are scheduled to send internet down to all users within a designated area on the ground. This designated area is referred to as a cell. Your Starlink is assigned to a single cell. If you move your Starlink outside of its assigned cell, a satellite will not be scheduled to serve your Starlink and you will not receive internet. This is constrained by geometry and is not arbitrary geofencing."
I asked Starlink for clarification on the statement above, and what happens when you move too far away from your home address. See below:
"You will be simply out of range of the designated area the satellites are scheduled to serve. The further away you get from the cell the weaker the signal until it eventually cuts out. Mobility options are being worked on but we don't have an ETA for this."

Just wanted to clarify my thoughts on the geo-fencing. They are simply just that.. thoughts. So don't go buying it and thinking it will work anywhere just yet. I should not have used the term designated, as that implies that there is a single specific satellite that you can connect to, but in reality that designation would change as the satellites are constantly moving. Starlink refers to this as scheduled satellites (see below). My take on it is as long as you are within range of the satellite scheduled to serve you (aka within your "Cell"), you will get internet. So not typical geofencing based on a radius around your home address, but they are still restricting how far you can go with it. I have reached out to Starlink in hopes to get clarification on all of this. Will keep you all in the loop! "Your Starlink is assigned to a single cell. If you move your Starlink outside of its assigned cell, a satellite will not be scheduled to serve your Starlink and you will not receive internet. This is constrained by geometry and is not arbitrary geofencing."

Theoretically then when someone figures out where the satalite location lock folder or something that references where the lock is then it will become region unlocked, if they have made it that simple to login it might be as easy as a comparison example using a vpn to get different stuff on netflix except with the Starlink dish just changing it's name fooling it into thinking you allowed to access other dishes in space.

starlink's fast-moving satellites are scheduled to exchange data with you at specific times. your location is limited primarily by the curvature of the earth; your dish has to be able to see the satellites at the times that they're willing to talk to you. if you're too far away from your service address, your dish won't be able to see the right satellites at the right times.
